The Best Type of Space Heaters for Warmth & Cost Efficiency

We have all been feeling the pinch lately, with the cost of energy increasing rapidly across the UK. Trying to save on gas prices? It may be worth considering the use of a space heater in place of central heating to warm up your home this winter.

Used effectively, alongside the sensible use of a thermostat, a space heater can be economically beneficial, keeping you warm in your bedroom or living room. While electricity prices aren’t exactly kind to the purse strings either, you might consider using a space heater in your home if you’re only requiring short, targeted warmth — instead of spending lots of money on your central heating over a prolonged period. So, what are your options when it comes to space heaters this winter?

Oil-filled Heaters

Oil-filled heaters are arguably the most efficient space heater as they are an example of a radiant heater. They use an electrical current within thermal oil, heating the oil and circulating it around the heater, which helps to produce radiant heat: heat that comes from a hot surface.

Oil-filled heaters typically provide long-lasting heat as the oil retains heat very well, meaning the heater can be turned off but still provide warmth, helping to conserve energy. As oil stays warm, you will help to cut costs as the less electricity you use, the less you will spend on operating your space heater, without having to worry about heat quickly disappearing. While space heaters are typically used for heating smaller spaces, oil-filled heaters are probably your best bet when it comes to warming up larger rooms. As these are a convection heater, the heat constantly rises upwards and outwards, helping to heat larger rooms.

Halogen Heaters

There can often be confusion around the halogen element of a halogen heater as people believe the halogen to be the heating element. In fact, the halogen element is incorporated within their heating lamp and bulb to increase the brightness as well as their lifespan.

Often used outdoors as patio heaters, halogen heaters radiate heat directly onto objects, rather than relying on convection to circulate the warmth. Halogen heaters come with various benefits. For example, they help to save energy as they produce heat almost instantly and, as the heaters effectively heat a small area, this greatly reduces the amount of energy the heaters consume. Halogen heaters are also typically very easy to install as they are light and portable, such as the Kingavon 1200W OSC Halogen Heater, making them a great solution to warming up smaller rooms on a cold evening.

Fan Heaters

Probably the most affordable option when it comes to purchasing a space heater, fan heaters (also known as blow heaters) consist of a fan passing air over a heat source. This warms up the surrounding room as the air warms up when leaving the heater. Because of their simple design, they are often very affordable with prices often as low as £20, or in the case of our Kingavon Fan Heater, under £20!

A fan heater is quick to heat so should be your choice if there is no need to maintain a constant level of heat throughout the day, but rather achieve a high heat in the shortest time possible. Fan heaters are at their most efficient when not impacted by outdoor drafts, so would work best to heat up smaller, indoor environments.

Where Can I Find the Perfect Space Heater?

At Highland Industrial Supplies, we have a range of space heaters to choose from to help keep you warm every winter. Often a great way to save money, space heaters are compact and portable meaning you have flexibility in when and where you switch on the warmth. You can save more by turning down your central heating’s thermostat while you have the space heater on. You stay just as warm, but you’re not wasting power heating rooms you aren’t using. While space heaters probably shouldn’t replace your main source of central heating, they are a fantastic solution when you don’t want to be running the heat all day.
